Altcoins Responsible for One-third of Crypto Mining Energy Usage

Expert analysis shows that out of the top 20 digital assets, altcoins mining is responsible for just one-third of the overall power consumption. However, a research team at the Technical University of Munich states that when it comes to the environmental impact of crypto mining, regulators place much emphasis on bitcoin and encourages them to look beyond the leading digital asset.

Although bitcoin accounts for 2/3 of the total power consumption, altcoins mining is responsible for the remaining 1/3. This implies that altcoins are responsible for close to 50% of the total energy consumption, which is enough to cause considerable damage to the environment. Some of the altcoins involved include Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, to mention few.

The researchers added that while crypto mining power requirement gives environmentalist sleepless nights, many studies focus more on BTC instead of extending their research to all digital currencies. However, crypto mining doesn’t have an impact relating to climate change but creates an excess power load that requires additional resources.
