There have been several stories of crypto scams recently, and this time, a YouTuber narrated how his account was hijacked. The perpetrators launched a fraudulent xrp giveaway program on his youtube page with over two million subscribers.
The youtube page - Universo Curioso, owned by David Damasceno, was hijacked after one of the attackers sent a link purporting to be video a editing application that he could use to edit his videos.
According to David, the name of the application is Zenium Editor - a software that is supposed to edit videos, and also help to track and manage advertising revenues.
As with most malware, after he installed the software, the hackers took control of his account. The Universo Curioso account on youtube, which does not have cryptocurrencies as one of its niches, was instantly bombarded with a series of posts, advertising a 100 million XRP giveaway. The scammers requested 2,000 to 150,000 XRP from those that would be interested in benefiting from the advertised program.
If you thought that the scammers would be satisfied with their 'bounty' from the channel, then this would surprise you! After making several posts and live videos about the fake giveaway, the scammers proceeded to demand $10,000 from David, as ransom before they would grant access to his Youtube account.
Fortunately, David was able to regain access to his account after six hours, without paying a ransom. Although It is not certain how many of his followers were defrauded, he has deleted the fraudulent posts from his page.
