Key Takeaway

  • Kenyan financial regulator warns citizens against investing in bitcoin company Fx Invest
  • Company allegedly offers investors 400% profits on investment
  • Crypto-based Ponzi schemes on the rise in Africa

This warning was issued by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) in a statement on August 12. According to the statement, Fx Bitinvest was offering an unrealistic return on investment within a short turnaround time.

The Bitcoin trading platform claims that investors are guaranteed 400% returns on their capital within six hours.

The statement also noted the names of persons associated with the Ponzi scheme and warned citizens to desist from investing with the trading firm.

It is understood that two of the identified individuals were based in Kenya and their accomplices based in North America. The financial regulator also urged Kenyans that had been defrauded to report to the nearest police station.

Victims were advised to submit financial evidence like payment slips and contracts to support their claims. They can alternatively lodge complaints at any CMA offices or online platforms.

The rise of crypto Ponzi schemes in Africa has been rapid and unsurprising. Africa is a region where a large population lives below the poverty index, and the opportunity to triple their capital is always too good to refuse.

These Ponzi schemes are also elaborate in their operations and typically recruit community leaders who convince their community members to participate.

As with any Ponzi scheme, the first adopters make a lot of money, and the evidence of their wealth convinces others to partake in the scheme.

When the scheme becomes too big to pay everyone, the founders abscond, leaving those who recently joined at a loss since they can’t recover their funds. Financial authorities have to do more to sensitize their local populace.

The crypto community also needs to educate the mainstream audience on how cryptocurrencies work and how to avoid crypto-based Ponzi schemes.

What are your thoughts on the rising trend of Ponzi schemes in Africa?
