Will The Face-off Between Trump and Twitter Open The Door to Social Media Decentralisation?

News • 2020/05/31 • by Remitano

The social media platform has developed over the years, allowing people to connect, and have access to information on time. As the years passed, so did the plethora of information increase on the public space, such that it may be difficult to sieve the right information from junk.

This development has caused several social media companies to introduce some censorship on the kind of information shared on their platform. While some users have applauded this move, others are questioning the right of these companies to determine what information should be made available to the public.

The recent face-off between the United State president, Donald Trump, and Twitter appears to have increased the voice of those calling for decentralised social media apps. According to Tushar Jain, a managing partner at Multicoin Capital, Web3 protocols built on a decentralised platform, will enable the user to customise and censor content themselves.

The road to blockchain apps

Remember the Facebook analytical scandal? The issue with today's internet services is that, for most services, we need to go through an intermediary. This process creates a database of user activities which a lot of these big tech companies sell to marketing agencies.

Decentralised apps(Dapps) provide the advantages of protecting your data and better customisable user experience on the app.

The discussion on the concept of Dapps started around the same time bitcoin was introduced. The same ideology of creating a means of value that will be free from government interference also prompted discussions into building decentralised apps. Dapps like Steemit was created, which became popular after inception, but could not retain users due to internal management crisis.

However, other Dapps like Dlive, a decentralised streaming platform, which was created after steemit, has been making massive progress in user registration and engagement.
