Cyber attackers involved in the Bitfinex attack that happened 4 years ago moved 2550BTC from the stolen funds.
Some of the stolen funds were moved on the 24th of June, an equivalent of 5 million USD. At this time, Bitcoin was trading at 11,379 USD per coin on Bitfinex at 6:15 p.m (ET) on Monday, July 27.
Bitcoin transaction stats from Whale Alert revealed that the cyber-attackers transferred 28 million USD Bitcoin in small transactions 6hrs before the price went up.
Around noon on Monday, Whale Alert, one of the biggest and fastest-growing crypto communities signalled a Bitcoin transaction that was sent to unknown wallets. The bitcoins that were transferred are said to have originated from the attack on Bitfinex 4 years ago.
In some of the reported transactions, around 85-174 Bitcoin was moved at once, while more than 400BTC were transferred in smaller bits. The series of Bitcoin transfers originating from the attack on Bitfinex happened at exactly 12:41 p.m ET and 1:49 p.m respectively.
The cybercriminal moved more than 2,550 BTC when Bitcoin was trading at 10,300+ USD. The bitcoin hack happened 4 years ago and the hackers carted away with 120,000 BTC from the exchange. The stolen crypto is equivalent to 1.3 billion USD at the current price rate.
Bitfinex, a reputable cryptocurrency exchange is still in operation and was able to recover from the loss and refund its users by creating an exchange security token.
The Bitcoins that were hijacked from Bitfinex remained unmoved for years until recently. The cyber attackers conducted the first transaction on the 11th of June, and the last transfer was on the 24th of June. Bitcoin equivalent of roughly 5 million USD was transferred in twenty different transactions, and the massive move of 28 million dollars was made on Monday.
