Brown-Forman Corporation, one of the largest American-owned whiskey companies in the spirit and wine business, confirmed that the hack attack attempt by REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, a criminal cyber gang was unsuccessful.
Brown-Forman Corporation suffered from a hack and was not willing to pay the ransom the criminal cyber gang requested. This prompted the group to put the stolen data up for sale for about $1.5 million in their darknet official blog, says Appgate, a cybersecurity service provider.
It does not imply that REvil’s assertion to have breached the internal network and stolen files were false as the company mentioned Infosecurity-magazine that the gang was successfully prevented.
Felipe Durate, a security researcher at Appgate told Cointelegraph that there’s no certainty the gang stole data from Brown-Forman Corporation. The only evidence to the above is an image of the data displayed on their darknet site.
REvil and other criminal cyber gangs would continue to grow stronger and attack others if victims keep paying this ransom. REvil and other cyber attackers have made many profits from previous attacks by stealing and selling data to a bidder who offers the highest price in an auction, says Duarte.
REvil accepted bitcoin for ransom and auction payments of stolen data until last year but they’re now adopting Monero because it is substantially harder to track than Bitcoin.
About 800 GB of data was stolen from a Spanish state-owned railway infrastructure manager, ADIF, recently by the criminal cyber gang after successfully breaching their system.
