Due to a CoinGecko bug, an unnamed cryptocurrency temporarily dethroned Bitcoin

CoinGecko, one of the world's top cryptocurrency monitoring websites, had a huge malfunction on Friday morning, with Bitcoin (BTC) incorrectly losing its status as the largest digital currency by market capitalization to a lesser-known altcoin.

The list of top-valued cryptocurrencies on CoinGecko recently became relatively useless, with BTC's market cap briefly dropping below a token called as Relevant (REL).

As of 7:20 a.m. UTC, REL was wrongly ranked first among the most valuable cryptocurrencies on CoinGecko, with a market worth of $6.5 trillion, or much more than all other assets combined.

The problem also had an impact on the overall crypto market capitalization on CoinGecko, with the market value briefly reaching $7 septillion. The problem was immediately resolved, and the website data looked to be back to normal as of 8:20 a.m. UTC.

CoinGecko co-founder and CEO Bobby Ong informed Cointelegraph that the website's issues were caused by a severe bug, stating:

"We are currently dealing with an internal fault that is hurting the market cap of several currencies, and we are working to resolve this issue." Things are settling down, so maybe there will be no more situations like this in the future."

According to CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko's primary rival website, the REL token subsequently rose after the malfunction, with its price climbing to $0.9, or more than 20%, during the previous 24 hours at the time of writing. According to the website, the coin's completely diluted market value is currently at $24.7 million, ranking it as the 5,378th most valuable token.

Slava Balasanov, a crypto engineer, introduced the REL coin in 2018. After reaching an all-time high of moreover $8 in April 2021, the REL token dropped below $1 in a few months.
