Pakistan Central bank position on crypto

While speaking at the 13th Karachi Literature Festival on Sunday, Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Reza Baqir expressed his views on virtual money.

He went on to say that virtual currencies have only a few good applications:

“When we consider the value proposition presented by cryptocurrency right now, the only use instances that have been proposed are exchanges.”

The governor noted that the law enforcement agency or lawmakers could not monitor transactions taking place in the cryptocurrency realm and the cause for the transaction while emphasizing the crypto-related risks. He claims that this is the primary reason why the currency is most suited for unlawful operations such as money laundering, fraud, and other types of criminal activity that are now taking place.

Baqir stated that the country’s financial system had been used in money laundering and other illegal activities.

Despite this, the central bank governor stated that citizens want the watchdog to enable bitcoin to be used, exchanged, and transferred internationally.

"Every new item does have advantages and some hazards," he stated. It is the responsibility of a legislator to analyze the balance... particularly, to determine if the advantages exceed the dangers when it comes to the usage of digital currencies in Pakistan." However, Baqir has stated that the hazards associated with bitcoin greatly exceed the advantages.
Meanwhile, he considers blockchain technology to be "very valuable" and capable of solving several of the globe's current issues.

Pakistan's authorities are debating whether or not to legalize bitcoin. Nevertheless, a high-level inter-ministerial group was set up to offer advice on whether cryptocurrencies could be allowed under Pakistani law instead of regulation. In January, the committee presented its findings to the Sindh High Court, suggesting a blanket prohibition on cryptocurrency.

Indian CBDC initiative ongoing

Nirmala Sitharaman, India's finance minister, said she believes the central bank will launch its digital currency this year.

She indicated that the country is not yet willing to take a stance on the regulation of bitcoin and other virtual currencies. It has started a review process, and after it is completed, the authorities would consider the information gathered before making any decision, she explained.
Sitharaman, giving a speech at the India Global Forum's annual conference, responded to a query concerning the CBDC by stating that the RBI is working on it and hopes it will be released this year.

"It was a deliberate decision made in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India." We'd want people to build it the way they want, but we are hoping the money to be issued by the central bank this year," she explained.

The Indian Finance Minister looked optimistic about the potential for a central bank-backed digital currency to make remittances and banking activities more effective and easy.

"We see great benefits in a central bank-driven virtual money," she added, "because in this day and age, bulk remittances across nations, huge payments among organizations, and large transaction across each nation's central banks are all properly supported with digital currency."

Sitharaman addressed the public's mistrust about the government's decision to tax cryptocurrency transactions without declaring them lawful. She claimed many Indians saw a good prospect in crypto assets, and as a result, the government indicated a stream of income in the business, she remarked wryly.

She stressed that the country does not seek to restrict or legislate crypto assets at this moment. She added that the deliberations are ongoing, and the legislator would not want to break any laws. After the deliberation is completed and the conclusion has been thoroughly considered, the country’s stance on crypto will be made public.

Instead of the expected crypto law, India's government levied taxes on the cryptocurrency industry in February as part of its yearly budget recommendations for 2022-23. It imposed a 30% levy on crypto-assets income and a 1% tax on cryptocurrency exchanges.
