NPPA Charges Ripple to Court over PayID Branding

A screenshot was shared on the 24th of this month by Rohan Pearce, the editor of Computerworld Australia, announcing that a new payment merchant in the country has charged ripple lab inc.to Australia's federal court. Though the legal documents are not publicized yet, it is said that the case alleges Ripple of infringing its intellectual property by using the payID brand name.

Over sixty financial institutions utilize NPPA's payment system presently, so its users can use their mobile number or email address to transfer and receive cash swiftly using PayID. Two users of XRP's open payment coalition proposed that the technology firm must have discovered the allegedly trademarked 'payID' name.

In 2017, Trademark license for "pay ID" was acquired by the Australian platform alongside another trademark for 'payID' in October of the same year. However, the trademark for payID was not renewed when it expired in 2018.

Ripple launched payID around June this year, and on the 17th of that same month, the technology firm registered for two payID trademarks with the U.S. patent and trademark department. A new application was then filed in Australia by NPPA on the 24th of July for that same trademark.

The technology firm stated that payID would make paying money into accounts less difficult and faster just like forwarding an email or SMS.
