Larger blocks centralize validators. It’s that simple. It’s the central argument in the entire cryptocurrency community in regards to scaling. Not many people familiar with blockchain protocol actually deny this. The following is an excerpt from what I consider to be a very well put together explanation of various “Layer 2” scaling options. (Of which, the only working one is already implemented on Bitcoin.)

So far, Ethereum is exploring two possible fixes for the problem. The first, "sharding," would require a small percentage of nodes to see and process every transaction, allowing many more transactions to be processed in parallel at the same time. The second solution involves creating data-link layers or "layer 2" protocols that send most transactions off-chain and only interact with the underlying blockchain in order to enter and exit from the layer-2 system, as well as in the case of attacks on the system. Layer 2 protocols transfer data between nodes within a LAN or an adjacent WAN. These are the two solutions presently being worked on to salvage Ether Blocks expanding challenges according to Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum CEO).

Scaling solutions come in two forms: on-chain and off-chain. Both come with pros and cons, but as of now, there is no agreement as to which is more promising for future growth. On-chain scaling refers to the philosophy of changing something about blockchain itself to make it faster while off-chain scaling also known as "second-layer solutions" don't directly change anything about the blockchain.
