Crypto mining is prohibited on Microsoft's online services.
According to a protocol revision that took effect on December 1, IT behemoth Microsoft won't permit users to mine cryptocurrency on its internet platforms without prior written consent.
The company is enforcing additional limits on operations like cryptocurrency mining to ensure the solidity of its cloud services.
Microsoft stated that customers must now seek a formal pre-approval from the firm in an attempt to fully utilize any of its online services for cryptocurrency mining in the "Acceptable Use Policy" article.
The revision stated that using an online service to mine cryptocurrencies was prohibited without Microsoft's prior written consent for both customers and those who access an online service via customers.
The firm's justification of the prohibition was brief. Nevertheless, as part of the steps necessary to "protect the partner ecosystem," Microsoft stated in an upgrade on Azure, its cloud platform, that crypto mining is banned throughout all online services.
According to reports, Microsoft stated that its most recent crypto mining limitations are intended to safeguard online services from threats including cybercrime, hacks, and illegal access to user resources
The firm further added that it might take into account getting authorization to mine cryptocurrency for vulnerability surveillance research and testing.

This is not the first time a major IT company has prohibited cryptocurrency mining on its website. Similar rules apply at Google, which forbids mining without explicit written consent from the business. A mining malware threat detection service for hacked accounts in Google's cloud service was introduced recently in 2022. Google stated last year that the majority of "cyber criminals" have been using vulnerable cloud entries to mine cryptocurrency.
Crypto mining is likewise not permitted during the 12-month trial version of Amazon's AWS. If users decide to mine on AWS, they can be surcharged and risk having their accounts banned.
Non-fungible tokens (NFT) were eliminated from the Microsoft-owned video game Minecraft before this year to "enable gamers to have a secure and inclusive engagement."

Utilizing a remote data center with shared computing power, cloud mining is an alternate strategy for investing in cryptocurrencies that enables clients to mine digital coins without the use of mining hardware or equipment. Since consumers don't have to incur the equipment and associated fees, cloud mining is among the most lucrative ways to mine cryptocurrency, according to the blockchain research organization Blockchain Council.
The report comes as the cryptocurrency winter is causing a serious problem in the cryptocurrency mining business, with many miners on the verge of going broke from a lack of funding
Cloud mining is prohibited on some platforms, such as Oracle, while Digital Ocean also demands explicit authorization.
Several sources report that due to ongoing supply constraints, Microsoft cloud computing systems have experienced significant performance bottlenecks in recent years. It is rumored that the number of Azure data centers will continue to be restricted until the beginning of 2023.
