Cybersecurity firm Symantec stopped a ransomware attack by a group known for collecting fees in Bitcoin ( BTC) directed at 30 U.S.-based firms and Fortune 500 companies.
The official statement published by the cybersecurity firm maintains that the Evil Group, the malware gang behind the attacks, is targeting the company's IT infrastructure. Still, the businesses were warned in time to avoid ransomware from being implemented.
The group used the ransomware WastedLocker and managed to breach the safety of the victims' networks and unsuccessfully attempted to lay the groundwork for staging the attacks.
Gang Calls for a Million-Dollar Reward
Cointelegraph also published an analysis by the information protection company Fox-IT, a subsidiary of the NCC Group, advising of the rise to cyber-crime operations of the Evil Team following a brief duration of silence.
The group is widely recognized for demanding its members to make million-dollar ransom fees in cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. There are rumours that the organization has demanded a cumulative amount of $10 from an undisclosed number of U.S. businesses who have recently been targeted.
The Symantec Targeted Attack Cloud Analytics team initially detected the early phases of WastedLocker threats by having to rely on sophisticated machine learning to spot patterns of activity related to recent attack vectors.
