Bitcoin is meant to be decentralized without any central entity or individual controlling the brand or technology. However, this did not stop an anonymous individual in Spain to register the name and logo of Bitcoin in Spain.
Fortunately for him, the trademark request has been granted by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. It means that this lucky individual would be able to legally sue someone else when they use the logo or name of “Bitcoin” with their business.
Some people were scratching their heads and asked the individual why he would trademark the word “Bitcoin,” and he claimed that he’s a cryptocurrency salesman. He also believes that the idea of having Bitcoin trademarked would actually protect the brand of Bitcoin, as it can deter many crypto scams that try to piggyback on the popularity of Bitcoin.
He also defended himself by claiming that he is not trying to be another Satoshi impersonator. He believes that the legitimate use of Bitcoin can grow if someone protects the brand, at least in Spain.
While his claims might seem believable, some crypto enthusiasts believe this is against the spirit of Bitcoin and decentralization. Putting too much trust in one individual for “legally protecting” the brand of Bitcoin would be naive.
