Coinbase Shares might be Available for the Public Later this Year

Coinbase, one of the most popular fiat-to-crypto exchanges in the world, might be listed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Reuters has reported that Coinbase is preparing for a stock market listing in the United States, and it might start as soon as this year.

Up until today, the preparations are still ongoing, but ultimately Coinbase would still need to wait for approval from the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). If the SEC approves Coinbase stock market listing, it would be an ultimate achievement for the crypto space, as this will be the first time that a crypto exchange gets approval in the U.S. stock market.

It is still not very clear whether Coinbase will go for an IPO or its existing shares would be simply made publicly available for everybody with zero extra funding. Either way, Coinbase is aiming to get itself publicly listed as soon as this year.

The crypto community itself is pretty much divided on this news. Some of them say that the stock market listing of Coinbase might help Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to get much more mainstream exposure. On the other hand, some people say that Coinbase stock market listing would restrict the growth of cryptocurrencies because of potentially tighter regulations.
