The twitter community was on fire yesterday after hackers hijacked accounts of influential figures to promote a scam bitcoin giveaway. After the accounts were hacked, the hacker sent a message saying that if people sent bitcoin to a certain wallet address, they would earn double the value transferred.
The twitter accounts hacked included those of the ex-presidents of the United State George Bush and Barrack Obama. Other accounts targeted were Bill Gates, Kim Kardashian, Joe Bidden, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet amongst others.
An unknown individual sent 0.00005348 BTC which is estimated to be around $0.5 to the wallet address linked with twitter hack in seven unique transactions. The unknown sender used 0.00121639 BTC transaction fees which is about $11 to broadcast this message on the blockchain: “Just Read All Transaction Outputs As Text, You Take Risk When Use Bitcoin For Your Twitter Game. Bitcoin is Traceable, Why Not Monero.”
The perpetrators of this notorious scam successfully duped Twitter users of about 12.86 BTC, estimated to be worth about $118,000. The baffling question is - 'Who's the message meant for?' Those who were duped by the BTC giveaway scam or the hackers of the accounts who carried out the scam?
