Telangana, a state in the southern part of India, is currently considering ways to support remote voting, through the use of blockchain technology.
According to Jayesh Ranjan, the Principal Secretary of Information Technology, the state of Telangana is mulling the idea of piloting a blockchain-based electronic voting system in some remote parts of the state. After a successful pilot, the state may then consider a wide-scale adoption.
Jayesh made this remark while speaking at a webinar, which had in attendance other top government personnel from the Election Commission of India and the Ministry of Electronics and information technology. These attendees also consider the model for implementing a blockchain-based voting platform across other Indian states.
Apart from using the proposed blockchain platform to conduct state elections, Jayesh also indicated that micro-groups and NGOs would be encouraged to conduct internal polls on the platform. The results and experienced gathered from allowing these smaller groups to hold elections on the blockchain e-voting platform could also be used as case studies to convince other states to adopt blockchain-based e-voting.
Jayesh also tried to dispel the apprehension towards e-voting, stating that blockchain voting is not as complicated as it sounds. To validate his assertions, he shared an example of the state of the Telangana T-Chits idea, which manages chit funds using blockchain technology.
The state of Telangana has been one of the frontline advocates for blockchain technology in India for the past year.
