North Korea Hackers May be Converting Stolen Funds to Cash Using Privacy-Focused Altcoins.

Hackers based in the North Korea region are suspected of changing stolen cryptocurrency to cash through the use of privacy-focused altcoins.

As indicated by an NK News report, a UN Panel of Experts stated that North Korea-sponsored programmers have taken around $1.5 billion in digital currency, and are converting them into cash in batches.

The hackers take advantage of altcoins that cover transaction trails (also known as privacy-focused altcoins), buy these coins, and move them to exchange with minimal regulation. After trading with other legitimate currencies, the hackers covert the stolen coins, to their preferred crypto, and then to cash.

According to the UN panel, the hackers also use crypto mixers to juggle the funds with those of other legitimate users, to make the trail difficult to follow. For those that may not be aware of how crypto mixers work, here's a little explanation. Just as the name implies, a mixer uses the same concept as a blender in the kitchen. If you put different items to blend, how do you separate the various component? So with crypto mixer services, these hackers can hide the trail of cryptocurrencies from different sources.

A top analyst from a cybersecurity firm - Fred Plan of Mandiant Threat Intelligence, also alluded that hackers from North Korea have the enabling environment to flourish in their acts because of the state's complicity. The country is already known to move funds through black market channels due to several international sanctions imposed on them.
