New players will be joining the digital identity field as MasterCard and IBM back digital identity project Trust over IP (ToIP) Foundation.
The project has already garnered interest and support from other private sectors players, non-governmental bodies and governments like the Canadian Province of British Columbia. These interest groups are all involved in other projects that help in creating decentralised trust systems by applying different technologies.
So how does the concept of Trust over IP (ToIP) work with digital identity? The name itself gives a kind of picture of what this network is supposed to do, which is to provide trust for people connecting over the internet. We can only achieve trust if we know who we are dealing with and can verify their identity. The concept is also similar to VOIP technology, which is used to make voice calls over internet protocols.
According to John Jordan, executive director of British Columbia, ToIP will focus on reducing or eliminating intermediaries in the communication process. They will do this by making connections and networks to be more privacy-focused. He also opined that the architecture that will work best in ensuring this kind of relationships is maintained is a peer-to-peer network.
The digital identity world has been getting new entrants over the years, as more opportunities unfold for the industry. The concept of digital identity is becoming more relevant to study because we are going beyond human to machine interaction, to achieving machine to machine interaction. Therefore, the right framework that will power other technological ideas like smart homes and cities must be developed and given proper attention.
