Pain ahead for algorithmic and non-cash backed stablecoins, says IMF director

Amid the ongoing crypto winter, the director of capital markets at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that there may very well be increased coin offerings’ failures and algorithmic stablecoins.

Tobias Adrian, the IMF's director of financial and capital markets, further explained this reality in an interview with Yahoo Finance on July 27. He stated that there might very well be further failures of some coin selections, particularly algorithmic stablecoins.

Adrian further explained in the report that the markets for risky assets like equities and crypto assets might experience further selloffs. He also expressed the possibility that some of the coin offerings may continue to fail, especially some of the algorithmic stablecoins that have been impacted the hardest.

In addition, the IMF head noted on Wednesday that he had observed certain weaknesses for specific fiat-backed stablecoins, specifically Tether, which he believes is not "backed one to one" with the US dollar (USD).

Adrian also mentioned the need for a global regulatory strategy for stablecoins to protect investors better. While determining whether any cryptocurrency is a security or not will be tasking, he also argued that regulators should initially aim at ensuring that crypto exchanges and pocket suppliers thoroughly investigate the coin before putting it up for adverts.

The most noteworthy algorithmic stablecoin to have lost its value peg is Terra USD (UST), now known as TerraClassic USD. It lost $40 billion in market value in May and is currently trading at $0.04.

Tron's algorithmic stablecoin USDC also experienced a decline to as low as $0.91 in June, but it recovered its value by adding $700 million in USDC to its reserves. The DEI stablecoin, issued by Deus Finance, also declined in importance in May and is currently trading at $0.18.
