Last week the Department of Justice of the United States reported that there had been two Russian people arrested for offenses linked to "a suspected scheme to defraud three cryptocurrency exchanges." And their Cryptocurrency customers valued at a level of at least $16.8 million."
Danil Potekhin (AKA cruznuswar) and Dmitrii Karasaudi (AKA Dmitriy Karasvidi) reportedly robbed Poloniex, Binance, and Gemini for at least $16,876,000 in fiat and cryptocurrency.
The two defendants have created numerous web domains that mimic the three legitimate cryptographic exchanges in 2017. More than 150 exchange members, including e-mail addresses, passwords, and other personal information, have received fraudulent login credentials with phishing and spoofing techniques. This allowed them in real exchanges to access the victims' accounts.
In addition to the robbery of cryptocurrencies in victims' lives, Potekhin and Karasavidi have engaged in price manipulation of the GAS cryptocurrency.
GAS identified in the prosecution document by the defendant as "a sophisticated market manipulation scheme which began in July 2017, using the robbed consumer credentials." The couple immediately turned their tokens in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, allowing Petrol's price to plunge and left valuable coins for the victims.
