"Bug" in OpenSea

According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, the OpenSea attack was triggered by a weakness in the platform's asset listing administration.

OpenSea relies on hefty transaction fees on the Ethereum network. As a result, unless transactions require blockchain settlement, the NFT marketplace functions off-chain.

To advertise an asset on the platform, an NFT provider must sign off-chain data declaring the price at which they are willing to sell their NFTs. However, the problem occurs when sellers seek to cancel the original listing via blockchain.

To avoid paying gas fees, merchants simply transfer NFT to another wallet, rendering the previous offer invalid.

If the value of the NFT has dramatically increased over time, providers may return the assets to their OpenSea wallets. To purchase NFT at the original price, the first listing on the blockchain was not removed.

In their attack, they appear to have discovered a design fault in the OpenSea system and purchased NFTs with a low floor awaiting orders.

It claimed to have identified at least five attackers, including “jpegdegenlove”, who earned at least 340 Ether, which is now worth more than $800,000.

When the vulnerability was detected, a new listing manager was added to the site. Users can now evaluate and cancel both current and inactive listings with a single button click.

NFT has also contacted and compensated affected customers. According to victim Robert Garcia, the Mutant Ape NFT sold for 4.7 Ether (about $11,300) on Sunday.

On Thursday, in response to Garcia's email, OpenSea offered him a refund of 13.8 Ether, which is now worth more than $35,000 at current exchange rates.
