Quantum computers have been a scarecrow for the crypto community for years, with some rumours that the developments of this technology would render all current cryptography redundant. This period quantum entanglement was used to exchange a hidden key that could be used for encrypting and decrypting communications. One could imagine if this technology would become a commodity that would make crypto hacking obsolete, as users would be able to authorize transactions outside the Internet.

Cointelegraph is said to have consulted crypto experts to find out how this technique might have real consequences for the industry in the immediate future.

Cornell University professor and co-founder of Ava, Emin Gün Sirer, told Cointelegraph that he has been waiting for this development for the last 40 years. He thinks it's going to be realistic sooner or later. "Yeah, I'm always hopeful! I wrote about it for the first time in the 1980s. It's going to be realistic at some point, "he said.

But the Bitcoin Core developer Wladimir van der Laan does not believe that it will be adopted in his lifetime:

"Actually, I expect it to be a long time before quantum computers are commonly available enough to apply to a decentralized network, if ever (like: not in my lifetime)."
