Russian users are welcomed by crypto exchanges in Kazakhstan, but there’s a catch
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the president of Kazakhstan, saw the state's first authorized fiat-to-crypto transaction via a regional banking system called Eurasian Bank towards the end of September. The transaction took place through a regional cryptocurrency exchange called Intebix, which enables retail customers to purchase cryptocurrency using the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT) as local payment.
In terms of countries and regions, there are no restrictions on intebix operations. Their business extends beyond Kazakh citizens as they provide services to visitors abroad. The company's cryptocurrency transactions, according to Talgat Dossanov, CEO and co-founder of intebix, are only available to cardholders from one of the country's banks. Foreigners are entirely accepted at Intebix, but Dossanov explained that to take advantage of the crypto-to-fiat transfers, they would require a local credit card.
The CEO pointed out that Intebix only permits cryptocurrency exchanges for certified customers, whereas financial institutions meticulously examine each prospective customer to determine whether they have been sanctioned.
Crypto-transactions are possible for Russian citizens.
Due to Putin's declaration regarding the planned partial recruitment to take place in mid-September, the nation became the preferred location for Russian citizens wanting to avoid the war and evade the callup and mobilization of additional soldiers into Ukraine. According to data, about 200,000 Russian citizens fled to Kazakhstan on October 6.
Financial institutions in Kazakhstan, notably Halyk Bank, have stopped using the Russian payment service Mir in response to the Treasury Department of the United State's concerns about restrictions. Along with the embargo of Mir, several Kazakhstani financial institutions also ceased to receive funds from regional offices of significant Russian banks like Sberbank, which forced many to relinquish their regional operations. Despite welcoming foreigners, the Intebix crypto exchange is still committed to complying with sanctions in its way.
Since the regulators, regulations, and guidelines govern us must be followed. Keeping a close eye on current events and circumstances to make sure we act as directed and constrained by the established framework, as stated by Dossanov
Additionally, it was said that because the company is governed by the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC), there are no restrictions on Russian people engaging in bitcoin operations on the Intebix platform. However, Biteeu, the European division of Intebix, no longer accepts Russian passengers as a result of Sanctions imposed.
Biteeu and Intebix
In the year 2019, Dossanov and Shukhrat Ibragimov, a Kazakh entrepreneur and the son of local magnate Alijan Ibragimov, co-founded Biteeu. The Eurasian bank's board has included Biteeu co-founder Ibragimov since 2017. Just after the passing of his dad, a significant ERG stakeholder, and co-founder, in the month fo February last year, he gradually rose to the position of board manager at the regional mining behemoth and distributor of raw resources, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG).
Ibragimov is the sole investor in Biteeu and Intebix, according to Dossanov. He continued by saying that due to Ibragimov's influence and his convictions regarding cryptocurrency, the effort is seen as the proper step to a lot of potentials, which is why Eurasian Bank is credited with being the region's first bank to accept cryptocurrency transactions.
One of the largest crypto mining centers on the globe has arisen in Kazakhstan. The nation has indeed been actively implementing rules to encourage the acceptance of cryptocurrencies, and in June this year, it formally let cryptocurrency exchanges obtain bank accounts.
