- In the wake of an overnight bout of volatility that brought the biggest cryptocurrency to six-month lows, Bitcoin (BTC) continued to fall on Friday.
- By the end of 2021, the e-CNY had 261 million unique users and 87.5 billion yuan ($13.78 billion) in transactions.
Optimism worth $40,000 comes crashing down
BTC/USD reversed around $38,250, according to data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView, after losing more than $4,000 in a matter of hours.

BTC was trading at $39,000 at the time of writing, with traders stunned by the unexpected decline, which happened just after the cryptocurrency had reached multi-day highs, reaching $43,000.
As a result, liquidations across trading platforms were large, as was expected. Position unraveling for Bitcoin and altcoins as a whole reached $725 million in a 24-hour period, with Bitcoin positions contributing for $292 million of that amount.
An indication that the region surrounding $40,000 had gained tremendous trust as a reliable support line was the fact that the overwhelming majority of the fatalities were long positions.

Friday's options expiration, which had an open interest of approximately $600 million, was deemed to be the primary cause of the volatility. On the other hand, external causes like as Russia's planned blanket ban on cryptocurrency trading and mining seemed to have had little or no effect on the market.
"Bitcoin couldn't maintain its hold on the $42.4-42.7K range for much longer, resulting in a nuke to the opposite side of the area and, most likely, continuing towards even greater downhill momentum and lower lows -> happening."

While more cautious experts had predicted a return closer to or even below $30,000 throughout January, the shift had taken a long time to materialize.
Bitcoin's decline has resulted in Ether regaining its previous level of support. Altcoins, on the other hand, have taken a substantially greater damage.
Out of the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, 10 percent dips were typical, while recovery were few and far between, with only Terra (LUNA) managing to keep losses below 5 percent.
Analysts predict that a break in the "bull market" in Bitcoin demand would ignite the next BTC price spike.
In order to contain weekly losses reaching 15 percent, Ether (ETH) plummeted below critical support at $2,800, the location of an all-time high from last April.

Among China's most popular applications in terms of downloads, the digital yuan wallet app has risen to become one of the most rapidly increasing.
Earlier this month, the software was made accessible via the iOS and Android app stores. In contrast, only users in pilot cities and at the venue locations for this year's Winter Olympics will be able to join up and spend their digital yuan at one of the 8 million merchants that now accept e-CNY.
Some of the trial locations for the digital yuan include Shenzhen, Xiongan, Chengdu and Shanghai, as well as the islands of Hainan, Changsha and Xian, as well as the sites for this year's Winter Olympics in Beijing.
