In a year now, only 39% of Ethereum has been moved from hands to hand, rendering over half of it dormant.

A report by Glassnode's proved that within 12 and 24 months of the past month's, Ethereum movement has only covered 28% of transactions, setting a record for the biggest on-chain trading. However, with the introduction of phase 0, 20% of tokens dormant since 2017 will be watched closely if they'll be moved.

Will large whales really lock their ETH away without a certain unlock date? Especially considering the cyclical nature of price and ethereum's "fluid" release/development schedule, Very obvious Bitcoin is the first and most popular DeFi product, but I’m open to learning about others.

I think so! The increasing gas fee in Ethereum network discourage its use in retail payments and that is a big factor on its own. The recent improvement in use is due to decline in fee charge and increasing lending firms farm projects which is now securing investment pool from the community with assurances of guaranteed APY yields. I believe that phase 0 of the Ethereum 2.0 will break the dormancy experience once it comes with pleasant fee reduction that can entice investors to move funds cheaply.

The ethereum 2.0 will increase the movement of ethereum if it causes the ethereum price to increase in value, that is what i think.
