Five million in BTC was moved from the Bitmex hack of over 4 years.
Four years ago, hackers stole 100,000 BTC from the Bitfinex exchange, and some of the funds are still being transferred between wallets, with a recent incident on the 30th of November.
Major Updates
- An unknown user moves 270.9 BTC from Bitfinex loot
- The majority of the stolen funds remain intact
- The bitcoin that was stolen from the hack is now worth more than 2 billion USD
According to data, someone has transferred BTC worth $5.2M from a wallet related to the hack. The address is assumed to be related to the incident has not up to 0.001 BTC in it. The funds were transferred to an unknown address that only holds the amount recently moved to it.
The cybercriminals have only transferred about 1% to 2% of the stolen coin since the incident happened. The criminals made a gain of about $72M when they perpetrated the act, but worth about $2.3B at the moment.
In June, the hackers moved 736 Bitcoin to a Russian darknet market, with some of the coins returning to Bitfinex.
A month after, an individual also removed 3,503 BTC from addresses related to the breach, and a transaction of about 2,900 BTC was also recorded two months ago. Several related transactions have also been recorded.
98% of the coin stolen remains intact since the incident took place. This might indicate that the cybercriminals have encountered some barriers to laundering the assets as stronger regulations are put in place.
