A report revealing the exploits of NetWalker was released by McAfee. This Ransomware popularly called mailto was brought to light around August last year. This report stated that since March last year, over Twenty-five million dollars have been requested for ransom payments by the perpetrators.
The gang behind NetWalker generated about 2,795 BTC from the beginning of March to the 27th of July, making this kind of Ransomware very lucrative for cybercriminals.
Investigation indicates that the NetWalker is a Ransomware-as-a-service malware because the crypto transactions were collected by the group and shared between various accounts.
It has been observed that the operators of NetWalker now use SegWit addresses due to its remarkable transaction speed and cheap transaction fee. To extend the malware and make it lucrative, the group decided to provide the Ransomware with a revenue-sharing strategy on the 20th of March.
NetWalker is behind the various hack activities on private organizations and public sector. It is challenging to calculate how much this Ransomware groups make, the figure we estimated is beyond doubt undervalued. Throughout 2019, firms worldwide paid over 25 billion dollars in ransom, Brett Callow, a threat analyst at malware lab Emisoft stated.
The report shows that NetWalker mostly targeted America and the western part of Europe. Hospitals were not targeted based on the hackers announcement because of Coronavirus, though reports are showing the opposite.
On the 19th of June, a hospital called Crozer-keystone was attacked. The database that was stolen was auctioned on the dark web.
