Lastest Update on China's CBDC: McDonald and other Prominent Retail Chains May Participate in Deployment.

News • 2020/04/24 • by Remitano

Last week, we reported that the Chinese government has started moving towards the activation of a central bank digital currency, with selected pilots by state institutions. The movement seems to be gaining momentum, as other private owned multi-national businesses would be joining the pilot scheme, according to report from Chain news.

The media outlet stated that they had seen a report listing other private sector companies like Starbucks, Subway and McDonald as part of the select companies for the pilot introduction of the CBDC.

The Xiong'An district had convened a meeting with the four state-owned banks, other state-owned participating institutions, and commercial retail chains. According to the reports, the meeting was to discuss the modalities for implementation and roll out necessary support strategies where applicable.

How soon will the digital Yuan be released?

There is no specific date mentioned yet regarding the official release of the digital Yuan, according to reports from local news media. We reported last week that the Agricultural Bank of China, one of the most prominent state-owned institutions chosen for this pilot, has already developed a testing interface, which can be downloaded from the bank's webpage. However, only whitelisted users can access the registration function at the moment.

There was also a report last week from local news media that the government intends to pay transportation subsidies to workers in the region of Suzhou, using digital Yuan.

Therefore, with new developmental strides mentioned every day concerning the deployment of China's digital Yuan, the question of what time it will be launched will soon be a thing of the past.
