Telegram Users Information are being Leaked and Exposed on the Darknet

Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, especially among crypto enthusiasts. For a long time, many parts of the crypto community have been praising Telegram for its end-to-end encryption and its “never compromise” approach when it comes to government interventions.

However, recently, it’s been reported that Telegram’s native contact import feature has been abused. Because of that, a huge amount of Telegram users' information has been leaked and exposed on the darknet.

The leak includes the unique Telegram usernames as well as the phone numbers associated with those usernames. The file of the leak itself is reportedly about 900 MB, which is very large, and might affect a big part of Telegram user base, although it remains unclear how many victims are affected specifically.

A Telegram technical team member claimed that this type of vulnerability is not a specific problem for Telegram. Other messenger apps that utilize phone numbers (i.e. Whatsapp) would also be affected by the same methodology.

However, people who have access to this leak would still not be able to access your Telegram’s two-step verification or telegram login code. If you have maximized your security settings on Telegram, you don’t need to worry.
