Key Takeaways
- A DDOS allegedly hit Solana, but the network remains functional.
- Microstrategy has purchased additional 1,434 bitcoins for $82.4 million in cash.
- The value of bitcoin is showing bearish signs below the USD 50,000 resistance but is surpassing top coins.
Over the last 24 hours, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is said to have harmed Solana's blockchain functionality. On the other hand, the network seems to have stayed operational throughout.
A DDoS attack is when many coordinated devices, known as a botnet, flood a network with fake traffic to knock it offline.
This is not the first time Solana has had this problem, with Cointelegraph announcing in September that the network experienced a 17-hour-outage owing to heavy botting activity for an initial DEX offering (IDO) on Solana-based decentralized exchange platform Raydium.
Blockasset, a nonfungible token platform based in Solana, noticed the latest DDoS attack on Thursday about 3 p.m. UTC, noting that:
"We are aware that token distribution takes a long time. DDoS attacks have jammed the network and caused delays in the Solana chain."
GenesysGo, a Solana-based infrastructure provider, also reported on the issue, noting that the validator network had trouble processing transaction requests but that the issue was due to "growing pains."
The truth of the situation is currently unclear because the Solana Foundation is yet to formally announce any attacks, while Status.Solana states that the network is fully working at the time of writing.
Microstrategy adds to its Bitcoin holdings, now totaling 122,478 BTC – CEO claims Bitcoin is displacing gold
Microstrategy, a Nasdaq-listed firm, has bought additional bitcoin. On Thursday, CEO Michael Saylor made the following announcement:
"At an average price of $57,477 per bitcoin, Microstrategy has purchased more 1,434 bitcoins for $82.4 million in cash. We have 122,478 bitcoins in our possession as of December 9th, valued at $3.66 billion at an average price of $29,861 per bitcoin."
Microstrategy had already purchased 7,002 bitcoins at the end of November.
According to data from Bitcoin.com Markets, the value of bitcoin is $48,736.87 at the time of this writing. Microstrategy's bitcoins are now valued at around $6 billion.
Saylor thinks that bitcoin will grow into a $100 trillion asset class, stating that it is outperforming gold. "This decade, digital gold will displace gold," he said.
On Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday, the Microstrategy CEO addressed the global adoption of bitcoin. When it comes to gold as an investment, he believes bitcoin is a competition. "The greatest thing you could do is trade all of your gold and purchase bitcoin," Saylor advised, adding, "Gold is a dead rock." It is, without a doubt, the worst-performing asset. There's no way to save it."
Ethereum and other major altcoins are losing ground against Bitcoin
While Ethereum is down 5%, XRP is accumulating gains near USD 0.85, and IOTX gained 14 percent and passed the USD 0.13 mark; the value of bitcoin is showing bearish signs below the USD 50,000 resistance, but it is surpassing top coins.
Bitcoin price trimmed gains after failing to clear the USD 50,000 barrier zone. Bitcoin is currently trading below the USD 49,000 support level. It is presently showing bearish indicators around USD 48,500 (04:26 UTC) and has lost more than 2% in a day.
On the other hand, BTC is outperforming other major cryptocurrencies today, which are down 3 percent to 10%. Except for XRP, which has remained constant in a day after a big surge above USD 0.90. ETH fell 5% and was trading below the USD 4,200 mark. The ADA currency is falling, approaching the USD 1.30 mark.
XTZ, WAXP, UNI, 1INCH, AAVE, QTUM, OMG, ONE, RUNE, COMP, THETA, FTT, and FTM are among the cryptocurrencies that have lost more than 5% of their value. Among these, XTZ fell 11% and was trading below USD 5.0. Meanwhile, OHM, CEL, and IOTX are currently up 6% to -14%.
The price of bitcoin is now consolidating about USD 48,000. If BTC breaks through the USD 47,000 support, selling pressure could grow.
