The Biggest Bridge Hack Ever

As per results disclosed on Feb. 3, a $320 million Solana bridge known as Wormhole was compromised.

The group revealed that the bridge had been compromised and that the attacker had made off with 120,000 wrapped ETH valued at $320 million. The inclusion of ETH was mentioned to make sure that the bridge's wrapped version is fully supported.

According to a recent notification on the Wormhole Twitter account at the time of writing, the problem has been fixed, and they were trying to fix the network.

Paradigm security expert "samczsun" investigated the situation and concluded that the attacker probably obtained the secret keys or attacked the bridge. He went on to explain that in an "identical transaction on Solana," the hacker "bridged out the Ethereum." To create wETH without depositing Ethereum, the attacker merely took advantage of a weakness.

Tom Robinson, the CEO of Elliptic, said:

"This illustrates that the safety of DeFi systems is yet to achieve a standard that is commensurate with the vast quantities of money held inside them." Because of the blockchain's openness, attackers can spot and target serious flaws."

The bridge creators have pledged a reward for recovering the loot in a statement on the Ethereum blockchain:

"We found you were able to mint tokens and abuse the Solana VAA verification." We'd want to give you a whitehat deal, as well as a $10 million bug reward for attack information, as well as the wETH you've earned."
