  • FBI joins investigation of South African Ponzi scheme MTI
  • U.S investors thought to have invested in the popular Ponzi scheme
  • MTI fleeced investors of over $500 million

This week, local reports stated that the FBI had joined forces with South African law enforcement agencies as they look to get victims' funds. It is understood that the U.S agency is interested in the case as some U.S investors were caught in the scam.

The U.S is known to be tough on schemes that fleece citizens of their money and regularly prosecute financial firms that offer U.S residents services without holding the necessary regulatory license.

MTI was regarded as one of the biggest Ponzi schemes to have been perpetuated in South Africa. The company promised daily returns of 0.5%, which totaled 500% yearly. It further lured investors with claims that it deployed a fool-proof trading system that guaranteed their profits and capital.

It is understood that MTI received more than $500 million in 2020 alone before the scheme's collapse towards the end of 2020. Since then, the CEO Johann Steynberg has been on the run, and the company was recently declared bankrupt with liquidators looking to sell what they can salvage.

Despite this evidence, the MTI core investors refuse to give up and have tried to slow down the liquidation process with different lawsuits. The latest one wants the courts to reverse an initial decision to declare MTI burst.

With the FBI coming on board, there is growing hope that the organization can deploy its advanced tracking tools to recover lost funds. However, the case of MTI shows the dangers of investing in Ponzi and get-rich schemes.

Do you think the FBI has good chances of recovering the stolen MTI funds?
