Bitcoin ( BTC) tends to dominate the popularity race among the main cryptocurrencies — but it has fewer accounts with real coins in it than Ethereum.

As shown by statistics from on-chain industry consultant Glassnode, Bitcoin has nearly 3 times as many registered regular addresses as Ethereum ( ETH), eleven times more than Litecoin (LTC) and one hundred and fourteen times more than Ripple (XRP).

The amount of new Bitcoin addresses generated every day is almost 5 times that of Ethereum. New Bitcoin addresses hit nearly four hundred and seventy thousand in twenty-four hours, the day after Bitcoin was halved, whilst Ethereum rose by just ninety thousand of new addresses total.

Nonetheless, 95 percent of the total amount of registered Bitcoin addresses—626 million — hold zero Bitcoin. It brings into doubt the status of the actual development of the network.

After the 2017/2018 bull market, a lot of Bitcoin addresses were emptied to zero on several instances, but the amount of Ethereum addresses with a positive balance remained high at a steady pace.

Ethereum has surpassed Bitcoin in the amount of non-zero addresses since February 2019 and already has about 10 million upwards of Bitcoin. The need to hold addresses with a limited amount of Ethereum for gas can account for a few of the differences.
