Networks are different Ethereum environments you can access for development, testing, ... It's hard to incentivise mining on a proof-of-work testnet which can leave it vulnerable.

For Ethereum to work in a decentralized way it needs a distributed network of nodes that can verify blocks and transaction data. You need an application, known as a client, on your device to "run" a node.

Networks are different Ethereum environments you can access for development, testing, or production use cases. Your Ethereum account will work across the different networks but your account balance and transaction history wont carry over from the main Ethereum network.
