Individual Detained in Romania For Cryptocurrency Theft

The Romanian authorities in an operation involving Cryptocurrency exchange theft, have apprehended an individual for alleged involvement.

According to investigations, Cayman islands is the location of the perpetrators.

According to the Directorate For Investigation Of Organized Crime and Torrorism of Romania, the heist involved crypto worth over $620,000.

As at the time of writing this news the following information was gathered;

There has been a cyber theft on Cryptocurrency valued for over $620,000.

In the process of investigation by the Romanian authorities, has led to the detention of an individual.

The investigation revealed that an unnamed platform company located in the Cayman Islands perpetrated the crime.

According to the prosecutors of the Directorate For Investigation Of Organized Crime and Torrorism of Romania, the crypto exchange suffered Cyber attacks between January 28 and 31,2021.

Details of the affected company were not mentioned, rather identified as the 7th largest Cryptocurrency operator in the world.

A sum of over $620,000 was suspected to be stolen by the unidentified man.

The unidentified man has been charged for IT fraud, money laundering, and hacking.

Information also has it that the hacker got access to sensitive API codes, which eventually opened the doors to the entire exchange's system full access.

The stolen cryptos were transferred to several Wallets to hide the traceability of the bypass verification procedures; withdrawals were equally made by the same man with amounts less than 10,000 lei ($2,430).

Prosecutors revealed that the individual intends to profit with such moves, as the people behind the wallets paid him in fiat.

Romanian authorities also revealed the information below

" The prosecutor of DICOT-lasi Territorial Services together with Judicial Police officers from BCCO lasi carried out two home searches; the following were discovered seven mobile phones, three laptops, five memory sticks and two electronic Wallets and the amount of 10,800 lei($2,630). The amount of 40,000 lei ($9,750) was also recovered in the account of one of the bitcoin exchangers.

Other important updates from the news is that the defendant is set to face pre-trial detention for 30 days as the lasi court will be in charge of handling the legal procedures of the case.
