The crypto arm of the firm, Wealthsimple Digital Assets Inc. (WDA), obtained federal approval from the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) on 7 August to open a cryptocurrencies trading platform.
The company asked for an "exemption relief" in all Canadian jurisdictions as allowed in "CSA Personnel Notice 21-327 Advice on the Application of Securities Regulations to Companies Enabling the Exchange of Crypto Assets." The CSA is made up of securities regulators from each of the ten provinces and three territories in Canada.
Cryptocurrencies listed on Wealthsimple 's website are owned by Gemini Trust Firm, a New York-based licensed crypto custodian with $200 million in cold storage insurance coverage, defined by the business. After launching a dedicated Wealthsimple Crypto account, users can acquire, sell, and keep their tokens in the Wealthsimple Trading app, which can also be used to purchase and sell equities, shares, and ETFs. Deposits and withdrawals may only be made in Canadian dollars.
