Following nearly 3 years of ban, Google will allow bitcoin exchanges to use Google Ads services once again.

Who is allowed to promote crypto on Google?

Only American crypto platforms are permitted to use Google to market their company. Still, certain conditions remain for those ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings), DeFi trading protocols, and other BTC transactions or associated products.

FTX, a US-based company, has expanded its operations via unconventional means and collaborations with large firms. FTX is notable as the premier crypto exchange to have sponsored the American Miami Heat with a one hundred and thirty-five million naming rights contract.

What will advertisers need before running ads?

  • FinCEN must endorse them.
  • They must be a federal or state-licensed organization.
  • They must meet all legal conditions applied to state and federal levels.
  • Their promoted pages must align with Google Ads standards.
  • Google says that advertisements for initial coin offerings, DeFi trading systems, or otherwise advocating the acquisition, sale, or exchange of cryptocurrencies or similar items are not permitted.
  • Additionally, ads that encourage cryptocurrency or similar product issuers continue to be prohibited.

2018 Ban

In March 2018, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, claimed "legal issues" as the impetus for enacting a tough anti-crypto ad policy.
In April 2020, YouTube, a Google company, was sued for permitting cryptocurrency fraud. Meanwhile, Google has been harshly chastised for prohibiting crypto advertisements while allowing fraud enterprises to market their platforms without restriction.

Google prohibited all advertisements for cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and initial coin offerings (ICOs), to "address emerging threats."
The ad prohibition took effect in June as part of a crackdown on unlicensed financial products. "We changed many rules to address advertisements in unregulated or speculative financial products including binary options, cryptocurrencies, foreign exchange markets, and contracts for difference (or CFDs)," stated Google's director of sustainable advertisements, Scott Spencer, in a blog post.

The ban extended to bitcoin exchanges and wallets. According to Google, As part of its efforts to "combat emerging dangers and enhance the advertisements experience online," it will begin banning specific gambling advertising, including those for businesses involving virtual objects worth real-world money, known as skins betting.
