Crypto regulations calling for more openness in bitcoin and crypto transaction has been submitted to the White House.

The Institute for Security and Technology assembled a special unit that forwarded a report on Fighting Ransomware to the White House administration this Thursday, including in it about 48 suggestions, including those that seek to reinforce crypto control.

Major Signals

  • A committee has advocated for more regulations in crypto.
  • The group consists of members from NCA, USSS, FBI and others.
  • They are advocating for greater oversight and control in crypto.
  • They aim to combat ransom ware.

The unit, which is called the Ransomware Task Force (RTF), is defined in the report as being a myriad union of volunteer experts from different segments of society and walks of life. This eclectic group had come together to establish their recommendations. Provide a conceptual context for a systemic, global approach to mitigating the ransomware problem, it says.

Ransomware payments are usually made in cryptocurrency, according to the paper, which is challenging to identify. One of the report's important recommendations is that the cryptocurrency industry, which facilitates ransomware, should be more tightly controlled.

Cryptocurrency exchanges should be required to comply with current laws such as Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Combating Financing of Terrorism (CFT).

“Introduce better mechanisms for the voluntary exchange of crypto trading metrics,” “Actually encourage cooperative sharing of information between cryptocurrency organizations and law enforcement,” and “Centrally manage resources in cryptocurrency seizure, and coordinate criminal seizure processes” are just a few of the suggestions in the study.

The use of cryptocurrency adds to the difficulty of detecting ransomware criminals since payments made with these currencies are difficult to link to a specific person, according to the study. Cryptocurrency ‘mixing sites' may also be used by ransomware criminals to hide their transactions. Some groups will also claim payment in privacy coins, according to the study.

Cryptocurrency ‘mixing sites' may also be used by ransomware criminals to hide their transactions. It also mentions that certain organizations would seek payment in privacy coins like Monero. The advisory committee did notice, though, that these coins are actually "not as volatile as Bitcoin and other digital currencies."
The total sum charged by ransomware victims rose by 311 percent in 2020, reaching nearly $350 million in cryptocurrency,” according to the study.

Conclusion

A lot of people have been skeptical about Bitcoin. And not just people governments too. Their biggest reason being the anonymity of Bitcoin and bitcoin transactions. They argue that it is often used by some unsavoury individuals to carry out illegal activity and criminal activity.

Just this year, more than three countries, including Nigeria, China, and India, have banned Bitcoin, citing some of these security reasons.

There is some division on whether bitcoin should be regulated, with a greater number of people advocating for leaving crypto as is. However, a lesser, minor group is advocating for more regulations in the industry. The future alone is what would reveal whether these regulations will be enforced or dumped.
