Two Bulgarians have been put in custody by the Bulgarian authorities for channeling over $1.5 million in electricity as prohibited by the law to run two mining farms in Kyustendil, a little town in Bulgaria.
Based on an August 14 report from the Balkan nation, the men who stole 1.5 million USD worth electricity to run a bitcoin mining farm in their farms have been put in custody today and would be set free after a day to await trial.
The power theft was disclosed by the country's electricity firm at a news conference and revealed that both men were citizens of Bulgaria. The culprits, residents of Sofia of ages 31 and 38 had been illegally powering their crypto mines for about 3 to 6 months. However, their mining facility was established 12 months ago.
The deputy director of CEZ Electro Bulgaria acknowledged that the electricity stealing was the biggest thievery the power company has ever experienced. The electricity would power the town for a month.
China's biggest electricity theft was recorded in 2019 when twenty-two suspects were charged after they were detained for stealing millions of dollars worth of electricity to power an illegal mining facility. Four thousand mining rigs at nine separate factories were confiscated by the police.
The authorities in Russia likewise try to bring down Bitcoin miners who steal electricity. In June, a miner who reportedly stole almost $500,000 in electricity was arrested by the police. Around March, another suspect alongside his nine supposed associates was charged for stealing $20k worth of electricity for mining operations.
