According to Chainalysis' research, there was a "substantial surge in illegal balances" in 2021. According to Chainalysis, the metric was $3 billion in 2020, whereas crime syndicates owned $11 billion in 2021. Furthermore, the ill-gotten gains represent the largest proportion of crypto owned by cyber criminals out of stolen funds, ransomware, fraud shops, and darknet valuables.

"At $9.8 billion, looted funds represent 93 % of all criminal holdings as of the end of 2021. "Darknet market funds come in second with $448 million, trailed by frauds with $192 million, fraud stores with $66 million, and malware with $30 million," according to Chainalysis. "Criminal accounts varied all through the year, from a bottom of $6.6 billion in July to a peak of $14.8 billion in October," according to the report.

Also, the Chainalysis survey found that darknet market vendors and administrators dominated the field when it came to holding coins for the longest time before selling. As per the study, groups that retain looted crypto assets keep the assets for the smallest period.

Even though there are "very huge accounts that keep longer than is common for others in the stolen assets group," there are "absolutely enormous accounts that hold longer than is normal for others in the stolen cash category." After assessing their accounts, the company also determined that illicit whales had "greater variance."

The firm's overall transaction revenue for 2021 was a stunning $6.8 billion, boosting market sentiment. Despite the data indicating a significant increase in monthly transacting users (MTU) from 7.4 million in Q3 to 11.4 million in Q4, COIN share prices plummeted 4.7 percent in postmarket trade, bringing the year-to-date loss to 30 %.

It's also important to note that non-trading goods like lending and staking brought in $213 million in Q4, accounting for just 9% of total revenue.

The US-based crypto company noted that, contrary to the record high circumstances of Q4, crypto price fluctuations and asset values have lately decreased due to world market uncertainty.

With a poor first quarter, Coinbase told investors that it decided to participate "aggressively" internally in 2022 while also preparing for any possibly unfavorable economic situations.
