In a documented announcement issued yesterday, 29th of July, the financial organization stressed the importance of enhancing its resources as it seeks to monitor and provide advice and assistance to manage the complex transformation of this category of currencies.

IMF acknoweledged that digital currencies have the potentils to make payments faster, less expensive and available. It also noted that digital currencies can also provide reliable and safe payment transactions within local economies.
The financial organization further added that it has a critical role to help member countries exploit the benefits and manage risks associated with crypto currencies. "The IMF has an important role to play in helping member countries enjoy the benefits of digital currencies and manage their risks,"

IMF noted that policy makers have to address different problems associated with digital currencies to ensure that it works properly within global finance. The report claims that digital currencies must be reliable, maintain economic and financial stability of the international monetary system.

It further added that it was critical for member countries to regulate, design and issue digital currencies that could maintain control of the existing foreign exchange system. IMF also distinguished between Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), stablecoin (virtual currency backed by legal currency), electronic money, and crypto assets (virtual currency) including Bitcoin, but which form of digital currency is predominant.

This is the first time that the IMF has released an extensive paper to address regulatory and financial concerns of digital currencies.
