According to The Star, Malaysian Deputy Finance Minister Yamani Hafez Musa discussed cryptocurrencies in response to a query from parliament member Nurul Izzah Anwar in Dewan Rakyat on Thursday. The parliamentarian inquired about the government's involvement in crypto supervision and regulation.

The deputy finance minister stated that virtual currencies are not a payment mechanism authorized by the central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia:
“Bitcoin and ethereum, for example, are not suited for use as a payment method... Virtual currencies are not a good financial asset or a means of payment generally.”
"This is as a result of the current state of crypto assets, which is vulnerable to fluctuation as a result of risky assets," he explained. According to the deputy finance minister, Cryptos is unsuitable as a payment method since they "do not reflect features of money."
