The agency advocated for more oversight over major monetary investments activities to forestall a worldwide financial collapse.

The Financial Stability Board (FSB) stated in a document released on Wednesday, February 16, 2021, that vital safety measures should be implemented to protect the stability of the global financial sector in the presence of the dangers of huge investments in fast-growing innovations with the small assurance of long-term prosperity, such as crypto assets.

"If financial firms proceed to be more engaged in cryptocurrency industry, this could have an unforeseen impact on their balance sheets and stability... If the recent trend of increasing the volume and interconnection of virtual currency to these organizations continues, it could have repercussions for world's economic stability."

With their fast expansion, cryptos do not represent a large fraction of the currency moving in conventional financial sectors, according to the FSB. However, they understand that if the current development pattern continues, there might be a substantial change in the traditional banking sector, which would have serious repercussions for the world's economic stability.

Contrary to popular belief, the FSB notes that the business is full of individuals who don't fully grasp how cryptos function and cites the rise in financial fraud, malware, and cyberattacks as major issues. However, in particular, the research is based on additional market-related dangers and weaknesses, such as liquidity mismatch, unbacked stablecoins, growing leverage usage, and regulatory monitoring uncertainty.

Chainlink is propelling Defi's development

Chainlink, a blockchain oracle services company, currently has more than $60 billion in smart contracts. According to a new Bank of America study, the system will accelerate blockchain use in the casino, betting, insurance industries, and many others.

As per a research paper recently published, the board thinks Chainlink is a significant catalyst of increasing total value locked in decentralized finance (DeFi). As per DeFiLlama, over $205 billion is currently held in DeFi — an increase of more than 300% annual growth.

Offering financial services like insurance, renting, and loans using blockchain-based smart contract platforms instead of conventional centralized platforms like banks is referred to as defi. Ethereum, on which Chainlink is developed, is now the main blockchain for Defi, with $121 billion TVL in its possession.

Chainlink is a blockchain "oracle" — a mechanism that links on-chain and off-chain data. These enable smart contracts to operate depending on simple inputs instead of simply blockchain-native variables. Its development was phenomenal last year, with the company aiming to reach $7 billion in TVL by the end of 2020.

The paper attributes Defi's recent rise to its "capability for hybrid smart contracts, or self-executing and tamper-proof virtual agreements, to irrefutably and safely retrieve reliable data from oracle nodes including market values, time of day, climatic condition, and GPS position."

According to the researchers, Oracle "allows the next wave of blockchain use cases" and has the potential to "interrupt key businesses."
