If you're unfamiliar with the term "NFT," it stands for "non-fungible value." Goods that may be swapped while maintaining the same value are known as fungible goods (for example, one ounce of gold may be traded to another ounce without losing its worth).

Non-fungible assets, on the other hand, can't be swapped or exchanged for another asset. Crypto assets that are non-fungible (like real estate or artwork) are built on top of blockchains. Gifs, jpegs, videos, messages, and so on are the most common NFTs.

NFTs have been available since 2014, but they're just now becoming well-known as a convenient method to purchase and trade digital artwork. In fact, since November 2017, a whopping $174 million has been spent on NFTs .

You may wonder what makes people want to join the NFT frenzy and invest hundreds to millions of dollars

  1. NFTs are a potential alternative for investors: As Rodriguez-Fraile explained, "people have always stored value in art. When it comes to digital art, crypto is a natural extension.

To put it another way, this is simply a more contemporary way to invest in art and use it like gold or Bitcoin.

  1. A collective virtual shared space: NFTs are popular among metaverse believers, and some people have entire collections devoted to them. Purchasing these assets not only improves our quality of life but also assists new artists and businesses in ways that were previously impossible due to gatekeepers, unequal systems, and a lack of access.

  2. NFT hype is all the rage these days, from both creators and the media: Hype People from all over the world are vying for a piece of the 10,000 punks up for grabs. This is a clear example of supply and demand, as with any limited-edition product, such as a shoe, toaster oven, or home in a nice neighborhood with a good school.

The World's Six Most Valuable NFT Collectibles

Here are the top six most expensive NFT artworks of all time.

Everyday's the First 5000 Days sold at USD69.3 million

American artist Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, created a digital piece titled "Everyday's - The First 5000 Days." It's a collage made up of 5,000 separate photographs, each taken once a day over more than a decade. It's been a long series of progressively expensive auctions until the NFT sale set a new record.

Beeple has been producing a new digital image every day since 2007 and has titled the series Everyday's.

For years, the artist was well-known for his digital work, but since the NFT craze swept the art world, his reputation has exploded as one of the most sought-after painters among collectors.

Christie's stated on Twitter that Beeple's Everyday’s work, which sold for $69,346,250, placed him among the top three most expensive living painters.

CryptoPunk #7523 sold at USD 11.8 Million

NFTs like CryptoPunk 7523, or "Covid Alien," are very hard to find. There are nine "alien punks'' in the whole series, but this one wears a mask.

The artwork was sold on June 10, 2021, and earned $11,754,000 as part of Sotheby's online auction, which brought in $17.1 million from 27 digital artists' works.

According to Sotheby's, Israeli entrepreneur Shalom Mackenzie, the biggest stakeholder of digital sports firm DraftKings (DKNG.O), acquired the artwork.

Even though the pieces were sold through an online auction, they were shown at Sotheby's exhibits in New York, London, and Hong Kong.

There is a virtual copy of Sotheby's New Bond Street London building in the online virtual environment Decentraland, which was also launched by the auction house.

Contemporary Art Specialist Michael Bouhanna of Sotheby's said that this auction's sale shows that demand for NFTs is still high today.

CryptoPunk #3100 sold at USD 7.58 Million

To date, the most money has been paid for punk, with the sale of CryptoPunk #7804, a computer-generated avatar of a teal-colored, pipe-smoking extraterrestrial wearing a hat and sunglasses, on March 11, 2021, for 4,200 Ethereum, or about $7.5 million.

In January of 2018, CryptoPunk #7804 was bought for 12 ethereum, according to CryptoSlam, an NFT data aggregation service.

On February 27, 2021, it was placed up for sale once again for 4,200 ETH, which was almost $6 million at the time.

CryptoPunk #7804, which sold for $7.57 million in March 2021, is presently the most expensive CryptoPunk ever sold.

One of only nine LPs ever made by Alien Punk was released. It sold for 4,200 ETH, the same as Punk 3100, on March 10, 2021. However, 12 ETH was worth roughly USD 7,566,173.88 at the time of purchase.

There were nine Alien punks in all, and CryptoPunk #3100 was the third to sell for an exorbitant sum of money.

He doesn't have as many accouterments as the other two Alien punks on our list; he's just got a headband on. With a price tag of $132.96 million, it's the only CryptoPunk on our list that's up for grabs.

Crossroads, another NFT by Beeple, was conceived in reaction to the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

If Trump won the election, one of two films would play, one showing him triumphantly, the other showing him dejected.

It was offered at $6.6million via Nifty Gateway, a digital art platform and marketplace owned by crypto exchange Gemini.

Twitter user Pablorfraile resold Crossroads to an unidentified third party for a profit.

The buyer used nifty Gateway's art purchasing services to maintain their anonymity.

You may contact the platform and ask them to broker a transaction on your behalf if a Nifty Gateway member wishes to buy anything without disclosing their name.

OceanFront sold at USD 6 million

A $6 million NFT of Beeple's artwork, "Ocean Front," was sold. To Beeple, it was an homage to the worldwide battle against climate change that the artwork represented.

Using Twitter, the artist announced that all of the sale profits would go to the charity.

Tron Founder Justin Sun placed the top bid of $6 million on Nifty Gateway during the auction for the piece of art. Bit Torrent (BTT) was purchased by a Chinese entrepreneur who created the Tron (CRYPTO: TRX) blockchain in 2018.

When Beeple's "The First 5,000 Days" NFT was auctioned off at Christie's for $69 million, Sun says he was an active bidder.

He said his last offer was $69 million, but another bidder outbid him by $250k in the final 20 seconds, according to him.

What will happen to the value of NFTs in the future?

When asked by CoinDesk if he thinks NFTs are in a bubble, investor and VaynerMedia CEO Gary Vaynerchuk said yes. But he added that this does not imply NFTs are doomed.

The internet was dubbed a fad by many, according to Vaynerchuk. "In fact, the internet was a technological revolution that changed everything, but a lot of the early initiatives were overvalued on enthusiasm."

Even Winkelmann concedes that NFTs are probably over-inflated.

The fact that so many individuals are pouring into the space means that if it isn't now a bubble, it will be at some time in the future.

Is It Wise to Buy NFTs simply because You Can?

We think it's all relative.

NFTs are unsure investments since the future is unknown and we do not yet have enough historical data to evaluate their performance. As a result of the developing nature of NFTs, modest investments may be worthwhile to test the waters.

To put it another way, whether or not to invest in NFTs is mainly a matter of personal preference. If you have the cash, it's something to think about, particularly if the artwork has sentimental value to you.

But bear in mind that the value of an NFT is solely determined by the price at which someone else is prepared to exchange it for it. With this logic in mind, it's clear that supply and demand will determine stock prices rather than traditional economic measures such as PE ratios and market capitalization rates.

In other words, an NFT may be less worthless when you sell it than when you bought it. If no one wants it, you may have no choice but to give it away.
