Iranian legislators are disclosed to have endorsed a scheme to slash four zeros from the national currency. The Rial has dropped dramatically in value as a result of chronic inflation and US sanctions. The official currency will be replaced as well. Economists remain pessimistic regarding how reforms would impact Iran's economy.
The Process
The Iranian Parliament has reportedly passed a bill allowing the government to cut four zeros from the national currency, the Rial. The weak currency of the nation and persistently high inflation has contributed to street protests since late 2017. According to the Iranian Student News Agency ISNA, the country's leading news agency:
Ali Rabiei, the spokesman for the Iranian government, said in a message, "The deletion of four zeros is a required step to simplify financial transactions." as per sources, the Constitutional Guardian Council is needed to ratify the legislation until it can take effect. Iran's state TV reported that the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) would have two years to introduce the adjustments — erasing rials from circulation and granting tomans instead.
The reforms are the product of the bill that Hemmati proposed earlier last year. The governor of the Central Bank noticed that his national currency was devalued 3,500 times since 1971. According to sources, the concept of withdrawing four zeros from the fiat currency has been
debated right from 2008. However, it has become a focus after the US placed measures on the government in 2018.
