Russia Experiencing Increase in Crypto Scam in 2020

News • 2020/07/30 • by Remitano

Internet security companies have noticed the rapid increase in cryptocurrency-related scams in Russia in the first six months of 2020. Researchers revealed that the numbers have tripled compared to this time last year. About 23,000 websites have been reported to be affected in these cybercrimes and more victims are still being searched for.

The scammers were reported to have adopted different fraud antics to get to their targets. An example is inviting victims to participate in surveys and get paid, but they will only be eligible after paying an entrance fee.

Another tactic identified involved sites that promise victims over $200 to mine cryptocurrencies but never fulfill the promise. Also, the scammers asked their victims for a certain amount for membership and membership upgrade. The victim is expected to receive more after each upgrade. Experts have suggested that a major concern is that victims provide details of their credit card during the payment method, which exposes their banking data.
