Key Takeaways.

  • Following in El Salvador's lead, Brazil has authorized the use of cryptocurrencies as a form of payment nationwide by adopting legislation to that effect.

  • The FTX meltdown won't affect or have any control over how Brazilians utilize cryptocurrencies on a daily basis, according to Thiago César, CEO of Transfero Group, which is strongly linked to the Brazilian crypto sector.

Brazil approves the use of cryptocurrencies for payments

Over the past few years, cryptocurrency has been a global phenomenon embraced by several individuals and companies. Many turned this unique currency into a means of payment. Others adopted its surrounding innovations as a means to better their existing activities. Countries have been included in the cryptocurrency's immense benefits. Numerous nations have now incorporated several cryptos into their systems, and more are on the journey to follow suit.

Last September, El Salvador made history as the first country to adopt Bitcoin as its official currency. Recently, nations like Turkey and Russia have also moved to improve the use of cryptocurrencies in their economic activities.

Some days ago, Uzbekistan legislators set the wheels of crypto adoption in motion by giving local crypto service providers official permits. In addition, a public declaration showed that the country's primary cryptocurrency market regulator had granted the country's first cryptocurrency licenses. All these developments revealed their preparations to roll out a new cryptocurrency system in 2023.

Recent news shows Brazil also following in El Salvador's footsteps by passing the bill for cryptocurrency to become a legal means of payment in the country. Despite not making Bitcoin (BTC) legal tender like El Salvador accomplished last year, Brazil has legalized cryptocurrency payments across the country.

Brazil's federal legislative body, the Chamber of Deputies, has approved a legislative structure that permits the utilization of cryptocurrencies as a form of payment across the nation. Although this is a big step for crypto in Brazil, the law still needs the president's signature.

Despite the bill's passage, all cryptocurrencies still need to be recognized as legitimate national money. Nevertheless, the measure would define payment systems under the control of the nation's central bank, incorporating digital currencies and mileage schemes.

The executive branch of the government must choose which agency will be in charge of oversight once the legislation has been enacted. But the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission will continue to have authority over deemed securities (CVM) tokens.

The law permits the development of licenses for cryptocurrency exchange platforms. It also endorses the holding and administration of cryptocurrency by third parties, in addition to identifying cryptocurrency as a means of payment. To prevent repeat situations like the FTX meltdown, the rule will also mandate that exchanges clearly distinguish between corporate funds and customer cash.

A comparable suggestion was made in June to enable Brazilians to utilize cryptocurrency as a payment method and safeguard their private keys from court confiscation. The idea is to turn cryptocurrency assets into a medium of trade and an instrument of investment access.

The CEO of Transfero Group, closely connected to the Brazilian crypto ecosystem, Thiago César, claims that even though the FTX crash has influenced many areas of the cryptocurrency industry, it will not control Brazilians' daily use of cryptocurrencies.
