Key Takeaways

  • Nigerian experts claim the CBDC is still not appealing to Nigerians despite the high adoption claim.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow invests in Terawulf, a Bitcoin mining operation.
  • German Banks are considering offering crypto services in the country.

Some Nigerian experts have questioned the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) claims that many Nigerians are interested in or migrating to the newly introduced central bank digital currency (CBDC), the e-naira. Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people.

Experts claim that the e-naira, which was exclusively available to Nigerians with bank accounts at first, lacked characteristics present in privately created cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, there is insufficient data on the number of e-nairas in existence. According to these experts, the CBDC's lack of these characteristics makes mass adoption a virtually hard goal to attain.

The CBN has released regular updates since the introduction of the e-naira in late October, indicating that Nigerians are embracing a digital currency that the government believes would add billions of dollars to the economy.

Furthermore, officials from the CBN, such as Ch'Edozie Okonjo, have utilized public events to rally support for a digital currency that is the first of its type in Africa. For example, in his recent speech to the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Okonjo allegedly stated that the CBN has registered over 34,000 transactions on the e-naira platform worth $450,000 (188 million naira).

Gwyneth Paltrow invests in Terawulf, a Bitcoin mining operation

Kazakhstan could gain $1.5 Billion from crypto mining in few years

Terawulf CEO Paul Prager tweeted on December 13 that Gwyneth Paltrow has invested in his bitcoin mining firm. "We're ecstatic that Gwyneth Paltrow, among others, has invested in Terawulf and backed our team of energy entrepreneurs' new paradigm for best-in-class [crypto mining] that uses 100 percent zero-carbon energy," Prager said. According to sources, investors such as Paltrow and Moj Mahdara, the Iranian-American CEO of Beautycon Media, "made a hefty, 8-digit equity investment in Terawulf."

Terawulf is undergoing a reverse merger with Ikonics, according to Joshua Fineman of Seeking Alpha (NASDAQ: IKNX). The publicly traded ticker will be changed to "WULF" due to the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger. Several cryptocurrency companies have used the SPAC approach to obtain funds via an initial public offering (IPO) to buy an existing business. Griid, a vertically integrated bitcoin self-mining company, unveiled its ambitions for a public listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) via a SPAC deal at the end of November.

Gwyneth Paltrow's investment in Terawulf is not her first venture into the crypto market; she has previously worked with crypto assets. Paltrow joined Abra as an advisor in the first week of August 2017, according to Abra CEO Bill Barhydt. At the time, Barhydt remarked of Paltrow, "She has been a major value add." "She's given us great business advise and opened up her network to us," Barhydt remarked.

German Savings Banks Plans to Offer Crypto Services to Customers

As per a report in the German magazine Capital, Germany's largest bank association is planning to offer cryptocurrency-related services to its more than 50 million customers. This could be a means for banks to profit from the current surge in interest in cryptocurrency in Germany, as individuals are looking for other investment options due to negative interest rates and inflation concerns.

This set of institutions is among the country's most conservative, with clients still retaining cash and not risking their money on other ventures.

According to a spokesperson of the German Savings Banks Association,

"There is a lot of interest in cryptocurrencies."

The proposed pilot is still under consideration, and the committee will have to vote on whether or not to approve it. If authorized, a working cryptocurrency wallet might be available next year.

Banks have certain benefits over formal exchanges because they often already meet due diligence standards and have a mechanism in place to do so. Users will be able to buy virtual currencies directly using their checking accounts, bypassing KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements because the banks already have this information.

Because of the Germany Savings Banks Association framework, each bank's decision on whether or not to offer these crypto services is made independently. This means that each of the 370 banks will make its own decision. However, according to Stern.de, numerous banks have already expressed interest in the scheme.> Start crypto investing
